It’s the height of the Roaring Twenties in early 20th Century America, and Aaliyah Carter is the singer working at a popular speakeasy called The Butterscotch Estate, in New York City. Born of mixed heritage, Aaliyah’s appearance is light enough for her to be allowed to sing at the club, but dark enough for her to be apart from high society and makes it hard for her to fit in at home. Aaliiyah loves the fantasy of the glamorous stage and generous patrons, though is aware of the rougher side to the illicit business. For one thing, her boss gets most of her tips, though she can hold onto presents he can less readily spend. She holds to her time in the spotlight, and the shining hours after, thinking it may be the closest she ever gets to belonging.

That is, until Martin Williamson comes to one of her shows. At first Martin seems like another well meaning patron, but soon Aaliyah starts to wonder if it could be something more. Martin is less bombastic than his friends and really listens when she talks to him. But as they get closer, and the mad-cap prosperity threatens to falter, Aalyiah must consider what she might be leaving behind.
